History

Engel & Völkers writes history

1977

The company Engel & Cie is founded with headquarters in a prime location on Hamburg’s Elbchaussee. The villa remains a central element of the corporate identity to this day.

1986

The company name is changed from “Engel & Cie” to “Engel & Völkers”.

1988

Engel & Völkers establishes the publishing house Grund Genug Verlag. Under its roof, the international GG Magazine is published regularly, showcasing lifestyle features, home stories, and exclusive properties.

1988

With Engel & Völkers Commercial, the company enters the commercial real estate market with a focus on investment properties, office and retail space, as well as commercial and industrial premises.

1990

Engel & Völkers opens its first location abroad – in Port d’Andratx, Mallorca. A milestone that paves the way into new markets.

1995

The Engel & Völkers Academy is established. As an in-house training center, it offers talents across the network comprehensive know-how delivered flexibly, future-focused, and available on-site or online.

From Hamburg to the world

In 2023, Engel & Völkers, consisting of both company-owned operations and franchise partners, generated an overall commission revenue of 1.1 billion euros. We were able to achieve this positive business performance thanks to our high and consistent service quality offered by us and our franchise partners at all Engel & Völkers locations.

Founder and visionary

Christian Völkers is the founder of the Engel & Völkers Group. In 1977, he founded the business with his friend and business partner, Dirk Engel, and turned Engel & Völkers into a global brand in the premium sector. Christian Völkers put together the Engel & Völkers bible that became the foundation of the worldwide successful franchise system and the in-house real estate academy. In 1988, he founded the in-house publishing company Grund Genug, and the architecture and lifestyle magazine of the same name. Christian Völkers, visionary and strategic thinker, continued to further develop an innovative range of real estate business concepts.

Jawed Barna - Group CEO

Jawed Barna has been Group CEO of Engel & Völkers since November 2023. His reputation as an exceptional and tenacious leader precedes him, with a strong track record in international organisations stretching back over 20 years. Now at the helm of Engel & Völkers, he is expertly steering the Group into the next phase of its global growth. He holds a degree in business administration and was responsible for driving sales and partnerships in his previous role as Executive Board Member and Deputy CEO at Zurich Insurance Group Germany. He has also served on several supervisory boards and helped a number of start-ups develop their business models.

With passion, team spirit, and an unwavering pursuit of excellence, we are shaping the future of Engel & Völkers. Together with our global team, we continuously drive our company's evolution - always keeping our clients and partners at the heart of everything we do.
