The Pijp: never a dull moment

The ‘Old Pijp’ and the ‘New Pijp’ now form the popular neighbourhood ‘De Pijp’. Two well-known squares here are the Marie Heinekenplein and the Gerard Douplein. The neighbourhood is renowned for the largest and most sociable market of Amsterdam: the Albert Cuyp, which is a daily market, except on Sundays. The P.L. Takstraat and side streets are known for the ‘workers palaces’, houses for the labourers working in the Heineken brewery, which is now the Heineken Experience tourist attraction. Partly because of the many local pubs, restaurants, terraces, and specialty shops the area is hugely coveted by singles and students. For the Dutch, the neighbourhood also has a claim to fame as the birthplace of one of the most popular Dutch singers of all time, André Hazes.

Bloemendaal

Bloemendaal is generally considered as a highly affluent village. The former manor estates have mostly been turned into beautiful parks with splendid villas. The village lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty with dunes, the sea, but also forests. It is a great area for walking and cycling. Hospitality facilities are all within easy reach, which is great for the locals as well as visitors. Outdoor theatre Caprera attracts people from Bloemendaal and beyond for a relaxing night out. B.M.H.C. (Bloemendaalse Mixed Hockey Club) and C.C. Bloemendaal (Cricket Club Bloemendaal) are renowned sports associations and the city centre of Haarlem is within easy reach.
